This quick and flavorful Tamil-style Instant Pot Dal Rice recipe combines toor dal (pigeon peas) and regular cooking rice for a delightful dish. Sauté sliced garlic, green chilies, fresh curry leaves, and chopped onions in oil or ghee. Add the rinsed rice and dal, along with water and salt. Pressure cook in the Instant Pot for 8 minutes, followed by a natural pressure release. The result is a wholesome and aromatic Dal Rice, rich in taste and perfect for a satisfying meal. Enjoy the delicious simple one pot meal with pickle,papad and a drink like mango lassi to make it wholesome.

– 1 cup regular cooking rice (raw rice)
– 1 cup toor dal (pigeon peas)
– 1 onion, finely chopped
– 2-3 green chilies, slit
– 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
– 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
– 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
– 1/2 teaspoon red chili powder (adjust to taste)
– A few sliced garlic cloves
– A handful of fresh curry leaves
– 2 tablespoons oil or ghee
– Salt to taste

1. Rinse the rice and dal separately in cold water until the water runs clear.
2. Turn on the Instant Pot and select the “Sauté” function. Heat oil/ghee, and add mustard seeds and cumin seeds until they splutter.
3. Add chopped onions and sauté until they turn translucent.
4. Stir in the green chilies, sliced garlic, and curry leaves, and sauté for a minute.
5. Add the rinsed rice and dal, along with 3.5 cups of water and salt. Stir well.
6. Cancel the “Sauté” function, close the Instant Pot with the lid, and set it to “Pressure Cook” for 8 minutes.
7. Once the cooking is complete, allow a natural pressure release for 5 minutes, and then do a quick release.
8. Open the lid, fluff the dal rice with a fork, and it’s ready to serve.
9. Enjoy with papad, pickle and a simple salad
